Hindu weddings are some of the most ritual-rich celebrations we have the honor of photographing. The mandap, the fire, the pheras, the saptapadi, the mangalsutra — each ritual carries meaning passed down generations.
As a Hindu wedding photographer, here's our honest guide.
The Key Rituals
Every Hindu wedding has its own regional variation, but the core moments include:
Ganesh Pooja — Opening prayer to remove obstacles.
Baraat — The groom's procession.
Milni — The two families meeting.
Var Mala (Jaimala) — The exchange of flower garlands.
Madhuparka — The groom's welcome ceremony.
Kanyadaan — The father giving away the bride.
Mangal Phera — The seven circles around the sacred fire. Each circle represents a vow.
Saptapadi — The seven steps taken together.
Sindoor — The groom applies red powder to the bride's hairline.
Mangalsutra — The sacred necklace tied around the bride's neck.
Mandap Photography
The mandap (sacred canopy) is the visual heart of the day. We position carefully to capture the priest, the couple, and the family who sit close.
Fire Considerations
The sacred fire makes the day visually dramatic — but also creates lighting challenges. We balance the fire's warm glow with our own lighting to keep skin tones natural.
Multi-Day Hindu Weddings
A traditional Hindu wedding often spans 3 days:
- Day 1 — Mehndi, sangeet
- Day 2 — Haldi, baraat, ceremony, reception
- Day 3 — Post-wedding rituals (vidaai, griha pravesh)
We adjust coverage for each.
Regional Variations
Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali — every region has its own variation of the Hindu wedding. We ask in advance which traditions matter most to your family.
Our Approach
We photograph Hindu weddings quietly and respectfully. We've internalized the ritual order, we know the moments that anchor each ceremony, and we make sure the photographs feel like the day actually felt.
