A dedicated bridal portrait session — separate from the wedding day — has become one of the most beautiful traditions in modern wedding photography. It's a quiet hour just for you, in your dress, with no timeline pressure. The photographs become some of the most treasured of the entire wedding.
Here's the honest guide.
What Is a Bridal Portrait Session?
A bridal portrait is a solo photography session of the bride, fully styled (dress, hair, makeup, jewelry), usually 2–4 weeks before the wedding day. The session lasts 1–2 hours and produces 30–60 final photographs.
Why Have One
- You only wear the dress once. A dedicated session gives the dress more visual life.
- No timeline pressure. Wedding-day portraits compete with cocktail hour. Bridal portraits don't.
- Try the look before the day. Hair, makeup, dress flow — you'll know if anything needs adjusting.
- Gift to your partner. A framed bridal portrait at the reception is a beautiful surprise.
Where to Shoot
Best locations:
- A studio with beautiful natural light
- The actual wedding venue (some venues allow pre-wedding shoots)
- A meaningful outdoor location
- Your family home
Avoid: locations that don't match the wedding's aesthetic.
What to Wear
Obviously the wedding dress. But also:
- The veil, even if it feels excessive
- Wedding jewelry
- Wedding shoes (don't forget!)
- Wedding-day makeup (hire your wedding HMUA for the session)
This is also the perfect rehearsal for hair and makeup.
Lighting
The most flattering light is:
- Outdoor: open shade or golden hour (30–60 min before sunset)
- Indoor: north-facing window light, no overhead fluorescents
How Long
60–90 minutes is the sweet spot. Longer and you'll be exhausted. Shorter and the photographs feel rushed.
Cost
A standalone bridal portrait session ranges from $400 to $1,500 in 2026, depending on the photographer's experience and what's included.
What to Receive
- 30–60 final edited photographs
- A few prints for parents
- Optional: a custom-framed signature print for the reception
Cultural Bridal Sessions
For South Asian, Afghan, or other cultural weddings, the bridal session is also a chance to wear the second outfit (the reception saree, the walima dress, etc.). Many cultural brides do two looks in one session.
